About Arthur Ferland
Arthur Ferland
The Ferland Suite has been named after the original owner of the house. Arthur Ferland was also the owner of the Matabanick Hotel, one of the first mine owners in Cobalt, and a great community leader of the time. The hotel’s property being on the shores of Lake Temiskaming, Mr. Ferland was one of the first involved in the region’s silver rush development. The first prospectors had to travel to Toronto by steamboat to register their findings. Mr. Ferland’s hotel, being strategically located near the docks, made him one of the first shareholders in the prospectors’ mines.
Not long after the silver was discovered, he bought a large piece of land to divide and build houses on. He anticipated that the beauty of Lake Temiskaming would lure the mines’ proprietors and managers to settle in Haileybury instead of Cobalt. He developed the entire subdivision around the Villa. The street on which the house is located was named Florence, in honour of Mr. Ferland’s daughter. He even had an electricity producing facility at the at the end of Florence street which provided power to his subdivision. Today, old bricks from the plant can still be found on the shore.
Mr. Ferland was known in a business way all the way to New York. It was he who first brought capital into the Cobalt district with his interest in the Nipissing , Green-Mehan, Red Rock, chambers Ferland and other mines in addition to being a large land holder in Coleman and Bucke townships. He was Reeve of Coleman where he took great pride in building stone roads to the mines from which mine men and the public profited much in the way of good travel.
About the Villa
The Villa was built in 1906 by Arthur Ferland a great entrepreneur and community leader of the time. It was one of the first houses to be built on ‘Millionnaire’s row’. In a very short time, Haileybury became the posh town of Northern Ontario with its Millionaire’s Row along the shore of the lake. Haileybury was the town with the most millionaires per capita in Canada. So it was not surprising to see a rule inhibiting people from walking the streets with a lunchbox in their hands. Many of these centennial houses are still standing today, since this was one of the only neighborhoods spared from the Great Fire of 1922.
Find below an interesting description of the house from the December 22, 1906 edition of the Cobalt Daily Nugget :
This handsome modern residence was the fourth to be built in Haileybury after the good building era came. It is commodious, most excellently build, modern, well arranges with reception rooms and drawing rooms, lavishly decorated with handsome interior finish, and exceedingly homelike in every particular where the Ferland family spend their time. It is this family residence that will be the center of social attractions during the months and years to come.
The exterior of the house today is very similar to what it was at the time of its construction. Even with the numerous interior renovations brought to the house throughout the years, it is still possible to imagine the lives that were lived by these mines Presidents during the silver rush era. The interior has since been divided into three separate suites but it still maintains its high ceilings, some of the original woodwork and the feel of a century old home. The house is built on a large 5-lot property including one with a dock on lake Temiskaming.
