The Murphy Suite is on the 2nd floor of the Villa, located at 620 Lakeshore Road South in Haileybury (Temiskaming Shores), Ontario. The parking lot entrance is off Florence Street.
The suite has two entrances. A common entrance for all the 3 suites in the Villa is at the front of the house on the side of the lake. From there you will go up one set of stairs for the private entrance to your suite. Another side entrance is available and it will be at the back of the house. Again you go up one set of stairs and it will be the entrance with the large patio.
The Villa is adjacent to the lake and only a few blocks away from downtown Haileybury, the public beach and marina and 8km from downtown New Liskeard and downtown Cobalt.
The Murphy Suite has been named after the second owner of the house Arthur J. Murphy. As an entrepreneur, A. J. Murphy played an important role in the reconstruction of the region after the 1921 Great Fire as his company A.J. Murphy Lumber Company owned five sawmills. He was also owner of a brick manufacturing facility, the Ontario Brick Company.
The Villa, or the Ferland House as it was known back then, was built in 1906 by Arthur Ferland a great entrepreneur and community leader of the time. It was one of the first houses to be built on ‘Millionnaire’s row’. In a very short time, Haileybury became the posh town of Northern Ontario with its Millionaire’s Row along the shore of the lake. Haileybury was the town with the most millionaires per capita in Canada. So it was not surprising to see a rule inhibiting people from walking the streets with a lunchbox in their hands. Many of these centennial houses are still standing today, since this was one of the only neighborhoods spared from the Great Fire of 1922.
Find below an interesting description of the house from the December 22, 1906 edition of the Cobalt Daily Nugget :
This handsome modern residence was the fourth to be built in Haileybury after the good building era came. It is commodious, most excellently build, modern, well arranges with reception rooms and drawing rooms, lavishly decorated with handsome interior finish, and exceedingly homelike in every particular where the Ferland family spend their time. It is this family residence that will be the center of social attractions during the months and years to come.
The exterior of the house today is very similar to what it was at the time of its construction. Even with the numerous interior renovations brought to the house throughout the years, it is still possible to imagine the lives that were lived by these mines Presidents during the silver rush era. The interior has since been divided into three separate suites but it still maintains its high ceilings, some of the original woodwork and the feel of a century old home. The house is built on a large 5-lot property including one with a dock on lake Temiskaming.
The President’s Suites offers you high-end accommodation in historical homes based more on the concept of vacation home rental and apartment style living rather than that of a hotel. Our suites and houses offer you hotel services in the cosiness of an apartment or a house.
The innovative concept makes it the perfect venue for your business travels, meetings, family, friend & group reunions, weddings or weekend holidays, or simply for a place to stay during a working period in the area. Each home and suite offers distinctly unique features. Depending on what you are looking for, tranquillity, atmosphere, or convenience, we will tailor your stay to suit your needs. It is similar to renting an all-furnished home and apartment and occupants can “check-out” whenever they wish either after a one-day, a few days or a one-week stay. The concept allows our clients to do everything they would at home, such as cooking, washing, relaxing and entertaining. We offer a free continental breakfast. We now have meeting rooms to meet your business needs.
Our homes and suites include the site of a century-old inn located on the historical Millionaire’s row in Haileybury (Temiskaming Shores), situated on the shores of Lake Temiskaming. Other historical housing accommodations are also located close by and with great views of the lake. Haileybury is a picturesque community located in Ontario and on the border of the province of Quebec. We are only a few minutes from New Liskeard and Cobalt.
